As part of the decommissioning of the Jacques Ellul middle school, the Bordeaux Metropolitan Area commissioned Plateau Urbain to study the feasibility of temporarily occupying the school, which was originally slated for demolition. Located in the City of La Benauge’s priority neighborhood, which is currently undergoing urban renewal, this 1970s building offers potential for providing space—not only for the vibrant ecosystem of cultural and social economy actors in need of workspace, but especially for the neighborhood’s key institutions: the municipal library and the project center during construction. The master plan for the urban development project is therefore being revised to postpone the demolition of part of the middle school and allow these activities to continue in the neighborhood, within a mixed-use, community-oriented third place.
