Frequently Asked Questions About Membership
At any time.
As soon as you sign your membership application, you will become part of the cooperative. In the month of June following your application, the members’ meeting will be called to vote on your admission to the cooperative. Subject to payment of your membership shares one month prior to the date of the General Meeting, you will then become an “approved” member—that is, an official member of Plateau Urbain—and you will be eligible to vote starting at the General Meeting the following year.
The General Assembly is the highlight of the cooperative’s year. All members gather to vote on new members and resignations, the annual financial statements, and the cooperative’s major strategic directions.
Beyond this key event, various formats are offered to members depending on their group (employees, experts, financial supporters, partners, residents) and their ability to get involved. For more details on how the cooperative operates and the type of involvement that might suit you, take this quick quiz: https://www.plateau-urbain.com/quel-le-societaire-etes-vous
There are two options for paying for shares:
- in a single payment by credit card or bank transfer, online via a payment link generated by Stripe when signing a subscription form,
- in multiple payments by sending us several checks with a cashing date written on the back to the following address: Accounting Department, Plateau Urbain, 16 bld Saint-Germain CS 7014, 75237 PARIS Cedex 05
Please note that membership shares must be paid in full at least one month prior to the date of the General Meeting in order for them to be approved and for the candidate to become a member.
Today, they are not.
If this were to change, the 1947 law on cooperatives sets a cap on remuneration, which cannot exceed a rate published every six months by the Ministry of the Economy.
Plateau Urbain is a cooperative society of collective interest, a Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) enterprise with ESUS accreditation. One of the guiding principles of cooperatives and the SSE is limited profitability, or profitability directed toward its social purpose. Furthermore, a SCIC must allocate the majority of its profits to its operations and its social utility objective (by allocating at least 57.5% of profits to its “non-distributable” reserves). In practice, since its inception, the cooperative has allocated 100% of its profits to reserves in order to strengthen its equity.
You already received it in your welcome email from the cooperative. The subscription form serves as a record for accounting purposes.

However, there is a minimum amount based on your membership fee, which you can calculate using the calculator found on the yellow insert on this page: https://www.plateau-urbain.com/la-cooperative-plateau-urbain/devenir-societaire/
The calculation formula is also defined in our bylaws, which are available at the same location.

However, there is a minimum fee based on your most recent fee level at Plateau Urbain, calculated using the same formula as for current occupants.
No. The minimum number of shares is set when you become a member. However, if you want to purchase additional shares, that is always possible.
When the occupancy agreement expires, the occupant remains a member.
You participate in the cooperative’s activities (voting at the General Assembly), have access to more information than non-members (financial statements, strategic directions, etc.), and meet other members from other spaces opened by the cooperative.
However, being a member does not guarantee you a space in a new third place opened by Plateau Urbain. To ensure fairness, every applicant must go through the application process.
Finally, at locations opened since the summer of 2024, a discounted rate is offered to members.
As an occupant, the only people eligible to purchase membership shares are:
- The legal entity (company, association, cooperative, etc.) that is the occupant. Employees and executives of an occupying entity may not become members. Indeed, if all employees of a large entity were to purchase shares, this would distort the “one person, one vote” principle.
- Individual occupants, provided you are an artist, freelancer, or self-employed individual, and have your own SIREN number.
Membership is open to all and voluntary; this is one of the principles of a cooperative. To withdraw from Plateau Urbain, please send an email to societariat@plateau-urbain.com stating why you no longer wish to be a member, along with your bank account information so that we can refund you.
The General Meeting must formally record your withdrawal from the cooperative’s membership. It is held every year in June. We will be able to reimburse you after the General Meeting, upon your request, and within a maximum of one year from the date you submitted your request, as provided for in the bylaws.
