Portrait of Lucas Malbrun – Artist-in-Residence at Césure
A graduate of Ensad Paris, he is a Franco-German illustrator and animator. His work explores storytelling through imagery. His animated short film “Margarethe 89” premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight (2023) and is currently airing on ARTE.
“I came to Paris to study at ENSAD, not far from Césure. By the end of my studies, I realized that animation and illustration took up a lot of time and involved many solitary moments. After having a studio at Openbach, I realized the importance of a dedicated and welcoming workspace. I ended up at Césure thanks to Marie Larrivé, my girlfriend, with whom I collaborate on animated films.”
“ I’m a huge fan of medieval art, which I often find very funny: the characters seem to be having a great time, and all sorts of fantastical creatures coexist without any issues. I wanted to link the imagery to harvest festivals to pay homage to the unifying, festive spirit and the culinary delights you can enjoy at the Césure cafeteria. Since they loved to party and act crazy, I figured it would fit well with Césure. What’s great—and a little dizzying—about animation is that you can try adopting very original points of view, like that of another species. Alongside my illustration work, I have several film projects in the writing phase: one about a dolphin and its ambiguous relationship with humans, which we’ll co-direct with Marie Larrivé, and a feature film about the encounter between Neanderthals and Homo sapiens.”
